Guide for Repayment to JLSC

The money advanced by JLSC must be repaid. Please be sure to repay the amount of money advanced. Since Japan does not have a system that a defeated party bears fees and costs, you must repay the amount even if you are the prevailing party of the case.

Any charge or cost for repayment must be borne by yourself.

Monthly repayment amount will be electronically and automatically withdrawn every month from your bank account on the date designated by JLSC, until completion of repayment.

Please choose how to make repayment from the following methods at the time the commencement of support under Civil Legal Aid is decided.

*Charges for foreign exchange conversion may differ at each credit card issuer. Please note that there may be a case where you cannot use this method due to the result of the inquiry to credit company.

Please fill in the number and date of expiry of your credit card on the "Application for Registration of Credit Card Information" and submit the same to JLSC after signed. Monthly repayment amount will be settled every month through your credit card on the date designated by JLSC, until completion of repayment.

*Remittance charge may differ at each bank.

Bank accounts at Japanese banks are available.
Please make payment by remitting fund to the bank account designated in the Decision of commencement of support.

*charge: 2.5% will be added to the foreign exchange rate as charge for foreign exchange conversion.

You have to open an account at Paypal first.
E-mail message will be sent to the designated e-mail address every month. The e-mail message will include a brief description of billing and the link (URL) to Paypal. You can make payment by simply clicking the link (URL) to Paypal, confirming the invoice displayed on the screen and logging in to your account at Paypal.

Please purchase an international postal money order denomination in Yen at the post office, fill in the necessary information and send the same to JLSC. Since your payment must be received, we recommend to send it by registered mail or equivalent methods.

*Other Methods
For those who can make repayment in a lump sum, we also accept remittance through Western Union. If you prefer payment through Western Union, please contact us by e-mail or postal mail.

Please be sure to confirm the repayment date, monthly repayment amount and commencement date of repayment designated by JLSC and to make repayment accordingly. Charges incurred for the repayment must be borne by you. If you would like to change the repayment schedule (e.g. increasing the monthly repayment amount and shorten the repayment period), please contact us by e-mail or postal mail. Once you designate yen or US dollar as the currency for repayment at the time of commencement of the Aid, it cannot be changed during the repayment period, and the same currency shall be applied for repayment of any amount of money advanced by JLSC for subsequent relating cases, if any.

If there is any change in your name, address, phone number or e-mail address during the repayment period, please make sure to notify JLSC such change by e-mail or postal mail.
*Your notification should include the following information:

Your name at the time of application of the Aid, Date of Birth, Aid Number;
Details of the changed items (Name, Address, Phone Number or E-mail Address); and
Phone Number or E-mail Address to which you would like to be contacted.

Upon decision of conclusion of the Aid for the case and completion of repayment of the total amount advanced by JLSC, we will send you a notice of completion of repayment within a month or so. Please note that the total amount that should be repaid or when your repayment would be completed cannot be fixed at the time of commencement of the Aid, since there may be additional amount to be advanced until the Aid for the case is concluded. The total amount subject to repayment and the repayment schedule will be finally fixed at the time of decision of the conclusion of the Aid for the case.

*If repayment is delayed or missed without notice, Japan Legal Support Center may cancel the decision of installment repayment and declare all outstanding balance to be due and payable immediately in a lump sum, cause its agent to send overdue payment reminder letter or commence legal proceeding for collection of money. Please note that overdue charge at the rate of 5% as set forth in the Civil Code of Japan will be incurred.
*Criminal charges (including imprisonment) may be imposed pursuant to the Criminal Code of Japan, if you apply for the Aid in spite of lack of intention to repay the amount of money advanced under the Aid.
